It is best to start looking for a suitable out of state moving company well before moving day. The Order For Service is a list of all the services that the long distance mover will perform for you. It will include the dates when your possessions will be collected and delivered.

The Bill Of Lading is a contract between you and the moving & storage company and it also serves as the receipt for your possessions. The Inventory is the receipt that lists each item being shipped and describes its condition.

Copies of the Bill Of Lading and the Inventory will be given to you. Read them carefully before you sign them and keep them safely. Do not sign any blank papers.

Interstate movers are required to provide you with a booklet entitled Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move, and to give you details of their dispute settlement program. They are required to provide you with the names of their process agents in every state where they operate. Their published tariff must be provided on request.

Check your possessions as they are unloaded at the destination and report any lost or damaged items. Make a note of this on the inventory before you sign it. You can lodge a claim in writing within 9 months of the date of delivery.
